APC Document 99: Add new course prefix, WLNG, for World Languages
Effective Date: Fall 2013
1. Add: On page 282, after the entry for the WGSS Colloquia courses:
World Languages (WLNG)
Courses in world languages not offered through other campus departments or programs.
171-6, 271-6, 371-6, 471-6 Special Topics in World Languages (1-6)
Courses not otherwise included in the catalog listing but for which there may be a special need. May be repeated for credit as subject matter changes. See the chair of the Department of Foreign Languages.
2. Add: On page 68, after the listing for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies:
World Languages WLNG
Impact: None anticipated. Transferred language courses will appear on a student’s transcript as WLNG courses rather than GENL courses.
Rationale: We are seeing increasing numbers of transfer students who complete languages other than those offered at UNC Asheville (ASIA/CLAS/FREN/GERM/PORT). The addition of a generic WLNG prefix will allow us to accept these as World Language electives, rather than simply as general (GENL) electives. Although the Department of Foreign Languages has no current plans to offer language courses not currently being offered, having the prefix does allow for the flexibility to offer Special Topics courses using the WLNG prefix. The prefix will also allow language courses from study abroad experiences (for example, courses from Japan or Russia) to be recorded on the student’s transcript as WLNG 173 instead of SABR 173.
